An early history of 1200 Hathaway Road

The following are " 'Round Towns " from the August 28th issue.
'Round Town will be back next week.

Dayton Country Club’s parking lot was jammed last Friday evening   “I wonder if we’ll get in the dining room?  I forgot to make a reservation.”  When Virgil Ricks, Dining Room Manager, was asked “…what’s going on tonight?”  “We’ve got plenty of room in here…all those cars are for people at the pool – it’s been jammed all week!”

One of DCC’s ‘faithful was at his usual table – Dr. Frank Shivley.  “It sure looks like Jim Losh with him…”  And it was.  “I though I was at DCC.” Said Jim.  “But it must be Schlotzsky’s cause that’s where I always see you.”  Norm Cammerer made a round of the tables – handing out and receiving ‘insults’ from one and all.

Tami & Jim Whalen had a table by the windows.  “Last time we saw you was at Bill Whalen’s Locust Wood Farm on Penewit Road…it was either Herb Whalen’s Ninetieth or Herb & Ginny’s Sixtieth…either way…it’s great to see you.”

Ginny had a Eightieth Birthday Party for Freddy Klefeker last night and there were lots of Whalens present.  Bill & Susan Whalen and their Adam Schantz Whalen  - who’s the ‘Car-nut.’  “Dad and I are going to a School Bus Demolition Derby tomorrow at Kil-Kare Raceway on Saturday.  It’s really cool.  I gotta school bus hood last time we went…it’s huge…you’re allowed   to take any of the pieces of the wrecks…The busses get tipped over and really junked…they’re having a ‘Combine’ Demolition’ soon and there’s a ‘Mobile Home’s towing boats’ event too!”  See what you’ve been missing by not being ‘hep’ to the Cultural Calendar of Greater Dayton?
Two of Kathy Whalen Kavanaugh & Jim’s children were at the party…Laura who’s company is transferring her to Raleigh, NC next week, and James Kavanaugh  - who arrived late:  “Couldn’t get away from the office (Cincinnati) ‘til late and the traffic was heavy…Grandma, I’ll just put some left-overs in the micro-wave…sure looks good.  (Remember when James worked for Benham’s Catering when a college student and worked every party in town?) Helen Kavanaugh Jones was one of the guests. She was the Publicity and Public Relations Director at WPAFB for years.  But it sounds as though her ‘retirement’ years are keeping her a busy as ever.

“We gave a surprise birthday party for my Mother,” began Shirley Berry. “…on Thursday, Aug. 16 here at our  home.  And, while we had the family gathered, we decided to celebrate my Dad’s September 2nd birthday at the same time.

“Dad surprised Mom with a ceremony to renew their wedding vows – at the birthday
party!  It was their 43rd anniversary. All of Roni’s daughters and their spouses and the seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren were there!

Jason & Jill Heffner of Bend, Oregon and their daughters Kayanna & Rain were with us.  And James Heffner of Centerville too.  Kim & Michael Byrd of  St.Paul, and their William & Charlotte.  Julia & Greg Mayeux, of Oakwood, and their Jacob, Henry & Anna completed the family roster.

“The party was a wonderful reunion and the Tri-fecta Celebration was done in style by Events Unlimited of Centerville.  They transformed the outdoor dining area of John’s and my home using vivid colors and a tropical theme.  We had live music and dinner that was elegantly created and served by L’Auberge….”

The place to be and be seen on the evening of Thursday, July 26th, was the Oakwood home of Lisa and Paul Mullen, The Little Woods, site of the 2nd Annual “Sip ‘N See”.   Guests enjoyed listening to acoustical guitar music performed by Jeremy Collins of Cincinnati, while imbibing on the signature drink of the evening, the “Taftini”, named for the co-sponsor of the evening, the Dayton office of the law firm of Taft, Stettinius and Hollister.  The focus of the evening was to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of local women-owned businesses.  Showing off their wares were co-host Lisa Mullen, Etcetera Women’s clothing; Jean Winham, Vintage Scout Interiors; Molly Cross, Molly Cross Jewelry; Debbie Stephens, Jenna Claire Handbags; Stephanie Geehan’s The Paper Chick; Candace Rink, The Busy Gourmet; Jo Leonard, JoJo’s Salon; Carmen Nauseef, Blink Of An Eye Photography; Cindy Garner, Portrait Brokers; Shalini Bahl MD, dermatologist; Stephanie McGohan, Collage Fine Tableware and Gifts and Whispers Home.  In addition, three charities were present, 100+ Women who Care, The Children’s Medical Center and Hospice Image 2007 Fashion Show.  “The evening was a great success”, commented both Lisa Wiseman and Liz Blattner, attorneys with Taft.  “I am looking forward to doing this again next year!”  chimed in Lisa Mullen.
