Jandel marks 2nd time winning golf championship

Emma Jandel, from the Oakwood High School class of 2006 is an amazing athlete, no doubt about it!

In June of this summer, she won the Ohio Amateur Golf Championship held at the Country Club of Ashland for her second time in a row. This back-to-back feat is something she is very proud of.  In August, she placed in the top 16 at the U.S. Women’s Amateur held in California. Emma is happy that she had a good showing but a little disappointed in her third match. She says, “I played badly and paid for it.”

Emma is looking forward to her upcoming golf season at The Ohio State University. To get prepared she has been playing tournaments almost every weekend and practicing, “I just really want to lower my scoring average and win tournaments this fall,” states Emma.  She credits her father for always helping her a lot and her coaches at OSU for guiding her in the right direction.  Emma will be a sophomore this year and plans to take communications, economics and statistics courses.

In the game of golf Emma has nailed two hole-in-ones and cites her major influences to be Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus, Anika Sorenson, and many of the OSU players who are on tour. The aspects she likes about golf are the competition and individuality.

“It’s up to you and no one else,” Jandel said. “It is a game that is as much about your mental attitude as ability.”  For anybody pursuing a sport Emma says, “If you enjoy it, keep practicing and good things will happen.”

Jills soccer 1-1 tie in season opener

After a summer of open fields and conditioning, a team camp at Miami University, and two weeks of two-a-day workouts and scrimmages in extreme heat, the Oakwood girls soccer team could hardly wait for the season opener against Fairmont to arrive Monday, Aug. 20.  Unfortunately, much needed rain also arrived that day, and the game was washed out, postponed to October 1.

Two more days of practice, and last Thursday the girls traveled to Valley View to open the season on the Spartan’s new artificial turf.  It wasn’t quite the start the Jills had hoped for, as Valley View took advantage of some miscommunication in the Jill’s defensive end, and scored just two minutes and seventeen seconds into the game.

Coach Dawn Gaydosh’s halftime talk was effective, as the Jills came out aggressively in the second half, putting great pressure on the Valley View defense. Tory Danis, Brooke Klopsch, Olivia Reasoner, and Molly Breidenbach all made runs on the goal, but the Valley View defense held. Midway through the half Coach Gaydosh moved Breidenbach from midfield to the frontline, a move that would pay off.  Still trailing 1-0 late in the half, another Oakwood surge was thwarted, as the Spartans kicked the ball out of the goal area toward midfield. Sweeper Rachel Huber was waiting there, however, and calmly chipped the ball over the Valley View defense to Breidenbach. Molly turned, and at the 6:20 mark, blasted a shot past the Spartan keeper to tie the score.

Oakwood continued to put on the pressure, but was unable to find the back of the net.  Finally, the Jills mounted one last charge. With 20 seconds remaining Tory Danis made a beautiful crossing pass to Olivia Reasoner, who hit a rocket, but the Valley View keeper was there for the stop, and the game ended in a one all tie.

The Jills defense was strong throughout, as stopper Hayley Ward, sweeper Rachel Huber, defenders Rachel Warwar, Liz Dickerson, and Erin Riley, and goalkeeper Lauren Luther were all solid.

The Jills have great expectations for the 2007 season, returning eight starters from last year’s sectional finalist team.

The Jills visit Alter Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. to play the Lady Knights in the midst of Alter Fest.

GDRA rowers take medals at Midwest Masters Regional

Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Indiana was the venue for this year’s Midwest Masters Regional Regatta, and rowers from the Greater Dayton Rowing Association (GDRA) received medals in both novice and other master’s events. The regatta was held on August 4th.

“We have rowers in their first year of competition as well as those who have significant regatta experience,” said Linda Clemens, Adult Rowing Coordinator, “and all did well. It was a great event for us.” GDRA adult rowers and adult sweep teams competed throughout the spring and fall in 1000 meter sprint races. The following are results from Midwest Masters on August 4:

GOLD:
Women’s Novice single scull: Anne Connelly (Oakwood)

Women’s Lightweight double scull: Jocelyn Piccone (Kettering) and
Lisa Reddick (Dayton)

SILVER:
Women’s Quad sculling: Judy Dryer (Dayton), Linda Clemens (Xenia), Anne Connelly (Oakwood), Beth Knouse
Men’s Lightweight single scull:  Bill Irvine (Oakwood)
Mixed Quad sculling: Chris Luhn (Casstown), Anne Connelly (Oakwood), Deb Reddington (Dayton), Paula Boch (Dayton)

BRONZE:
Mixed double scull: Doug Barker (Xenia) and Linda Clemens (Xenia)
Women’s Novice single scull: Paula Boch (Dayton)

The club is now actively preparing for the fall head-race season, which begins in September. “Our fall season races are usually 5Ks,” said Clemens. “They require a different type of preparation and training.”

GDRA’s adult sweep crews and its junior rowers are also planning to compete in the upcoming season. GDRA’s own regatta is slated for Oct.7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Island MetroPark. This annual event, originally the Five Rivers Fall Regatta, has been renamed Charlie Doyle Memorial Regatta in honor of Doyle—its former junior rowing coordinator—who died suddenly in June.

Jills hockey falls to St. Ursula 3-4 in opener

The Oakwood varsity field hockey team hosted St. Ursula on Tuesday to start their 2007 season.  The game was a tale of two halves when on a very hot evening Oakwood started cool with much of the early action in the Jills defensive end.  Freshman Amy Beck started in goal and made an excellent aggressive save early and the defensive lineup held up until St. Ursula began the scoring with 13: 45 left in the first quarter. The opponents scored six minutes later on a strong breakaway angle shot from the right side that the Jill defense could not get back to cover.  The same happened within the last minute and the Jills trailed by three going
into the half.  At half time second year Head Coach Linday Shafer adjusted the lineup and the Jills came out firing.

The Jills played an aggressive offensive game. The offense got downfield quickly after Sarah Oda powered the ball through the St. Ursula defense and fed the ball to a well-positioned Molly Bartlett who tipped it in on the left side. Shortly thereafter, Oda moved the ball up the middle on a similar drive toward the opponents’ end and scored on an unassisted breakaway goal from the top of the circle. The rally continued on a well-executed set play one of their two penalty corners.  Laura
German in bounded to Co-Captain Caroline Hartel who drew defenders toward her and flicked the ball to Co-Captain Sarah Maher who unleashed her patented power drive toward the goal. Sarah’s’ powerful shot was deflected by Bartlett into the left side of the goal for her second goal of the evening. Strong play by Sarah Maher in the defensive zone kept multiple attacks away from the Jills goal and killed many St. Ursula penalty corners. The final blow however was dealt by St. Ursula as a weak shot dribbled into the right side of the Jills goal. The Jills were out shot, by almost a 2 to 1 margin with minimal opportunities from penalty corners.  .
