Jacks axe two tribes in a row

Back-to-back victories over Stebbins Indians 28-7; Carlisle Indians fall 44-13

The Oakwood Lumberjacks hosted the Stebbins Indians on Friday at Mack Hummon Stadium. The game was billed as ‘Game of the Week’ by WHIO and covered by all the local news stations.  The Jacks balanced attack, 251 yards passing and 253 yards rushing, entertained the packed house.  AJ Lewis tossed three TD passes and ran for a score.  Robby Sherk tallied 108 yards receiving with 2 catches for scores. Chris Hardy totaled 110 yards rushing on 10 carries with 2 TDs on the ground and another through the air. Connor Charbat scored twice and caught an 80 yard TD pass from Matt Carpenter. The offensive line of Brian Beck, Matt Money, Greg Ambrose, Tommy Lambert and Joe Lefforge opened holes and dominated the line of scrimmage. The defense, led by Money and Lefforge, allowed the Indians next to
nothing.

David Miller starts the game with the opening kick-off to Stebbins.

David Miller kicked off to start the game. The Indians returned the ball to their 21, but went 3 and out.  Chris Hardy fielded the ensuing punt on the Oakwood 47 and his return went 30 yards to the Indian 23. Lewis hit Sherk for a short gain. Tony Lamb hammered out a first down.  Lewis carried the ball to the 4, but a penalty moved the ball back to the 14.  Lewis hit Sherk again and he dashed to paydirt with 6:17 left in the first quarter.  The Jacks, following an Indian punt, started the drive on their 45.  Lewis and Sherk struck again, this time with a 55 yard scoring strike.  Miller’s
kick was good and the Jacks were off to a 13 – 0 start.

Oakwood worked it’s way to the Stebbins 30 with runs by Lewis, Hardy and Sherk. Lewis then rolled right and hit Hardy with a pass in stride for a 30 yard score.  Miller’s kick made the score 20 – 0 in favor of the Jacks.

Oakwood continued to dominate and built up to 28 points in the third quarter.  AJ Lewis had a 34 yard TD gallop and Hardy added TD runs of 25 and 28 yards. Oakwood controlled the game from the beginning. The Jacks went turnover free and were not forced to punt. All Oakwood players saw time in the game with Brad Achtermann, Scott Feldmiller, Trey Godbolt, Kevin Harrell, Max Olavarria, Justin MaCauley, Nolan Kronbergs and Aaron Sparks making big contributions in the victory.

Carlisle Indians fall to Jacks 44-13

The Oakwood Lumberjacks then traveled to Carlisle’s Laughlin Field for a meeting with the 1–1 Indians on Friday. The Jacks, 2–0 on the year, entered the contest a heavy favorite and ranked second in the Dayton Daily News D-4 poll.

David Milled kicked off to begin the game.  The Indians didn’t read Oakwood’s press clippings and broke off a 73 yard TD run on the 3rd play of the game.  Chris Hardy returned the ensuing kick off to the Jack 36.  AJ Lewis escaped pressure, ran for 15 yards and a first down.  Carlisle muscled up and held the Jacks to no gain on the next 3 plays, forcing a Damian Rudy punt.  The kick was downed on the Carlisle 19.

The Jacks defense proved the first Carlisle score was a fluke.  Plays by Matt Money, Joe Lefforge and Hardy forced the first of 6 three and outs for the Indians.  Robby Sherk returned the Indian punt to the 50 yard line.  Chris Hardy shot through a hole created by Brian Beck and ran to the 9.  Sherk and Tony Lamb made beautiful downfield blocks on the play.  Hardy, after runs by Lamb and Lewis, scored from 2 yards out.  Miller’s kick was good and the score was tied 7 – 7.

After another Carlisle 3 and out, Hardy fair caught the punt on the Indian 49.  Lewis, on the move, fired a bomb to Sherk.  Robby made a fingertip grab and sped to pay dirt.  The kick failed and Oakwood had a 13 – 7 lead with 3:37 to play in the first quarter.  The teams exchanged 3 and outs, as both defenses toughened up.  Rudy pounded another punt which was fair caught on the Indian 4.  Carlisle was stuffed, but had 4th and 3 from their 12.  They faked a punt and somehow managed a first down.  The Indians found themselves in another 4th down situation and went for it again.  The Jacks gang tackled the ball carrier for a loss and turned the ball over to the Jacks on their 25.  Lewis, in the spread offense, handed the ball to Hardy.  He went left and flipped the ball to Sherk on the reverse.  He went untouched for the score.  Miller’s kick was good and the Jacks took a 20 – 7 lead.  Carlisle, in another fourth and short, decided to punt.  Sherk made a nice 8 yard return to the Carlisle 41.  Lefforge and Greg Ambrose blew open a hole and Hardy cruised to the end zone.  Miller’s kick was good and Oakwood went up 27 - 7 with the first half coming to a close.

The Jacks came out for the 2nd half hoping to set the tone.  The Jacks moved the ball downfield to the Carlisle 13.  Sherk, Hardy, Lewis and Lamb powered the drive.  The Indians stopped the bleeding and forced a 4th and short.  David Miller, with Will Garner holding, booted a 30 yard field goal and pushing the lead to 30-7.  The Jacks scored two more times in the 4th quarter.  Tony Lamb caught a 12 yard TD pass from Lewis and John Whalen returned a punt 79 yards for a score.  Ben Scott had an interception that he returned 80 yards for a score, but was called back for an illegal block (bad call).  The turnover led to Lamb’s score. Oakwood moves to 3 – 0 on the year with the 44 – 13 victory.  The line play of Tommy Lambert, Matt Money, Greg Ambrose, Brian Beck, Joe Lefforge controlled the tempo and gave Hardy, Lewis, Sherk and Lamb room to move.  Lewis was 5 for 9 throwing the ball for 86 yards and 2 TDS.  Hardy had 141 yards on the ground.  The defense, led by Lamb, Lefforge, Allen, Money, Doty, Beck and Hardy allowed only 158 total yards, 73 of that on one play.  The pass defense of Scott, Whalen, Garner and Sherk allowed only 2 completions.  Nolan Kronbergs, Justin Macaulay, Scott Feldmiller, Brad Achtermann, Kevin Harrell, Aaron Sparks and Jonathan Shine all made outstanding Plays.

The Jacks host Valley View on Friday at Hummon Field in a battle of SWBL powerhouses.  GO JACKS!!

Schools to host meeting for Senior Citizens

The Oakwood Schools, in coordination with the Montgomery County Auditor’s Office, will hold a meeting for Oakwood Senior Citizens on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. at the Board Office Building.  The purpose of the meeting will be an opportunity for senior citizens to sign up for the newly expanded Homestead Exemption and to ask questions about taxes and the school district operations.

Oakwood School Treasurer Kevin Philo and Montgomery County Auditor Karl Keith will lead the meeting and also be available to help seniors fill out the necessary application for the Homestead Exemption.

The Homestead program is designed to provide tax credit relief to citizens who are least 65 years of age or are permanently and totally disabled. An applicant must own and reside in the home for which they are applying. On June 30, 2007 Governor Strickland signed into law new guidelines for the Homestead program that eliminated income eligibility guidelines.  Now any homeowner who is 65 or older is eligible for an exemption.

The new law exempts the first $25,000 of appraised value of the home, which can save senior citizens hundreds of dollars annually on their tax bill. Seniors must apply by Oct. 1.

The school district and other taxing governments are then reimbursed these tax dollars by the State of Ohio.

County Auditor Karl Keith has made many presentations about the exemption throughout Montgomery County and his goal is to sign up 30,000 new applicants with his extensive public relations and outreach campaign.

The Oakwood Schools will provide sandwiches and refreshments for this meeting at the Board Office, located at 20 Rubicon Road, directly behind the Oakwood Post Office.  If you have any questions about this meeting, please contact School Treasurer Kevin Philo at 297-5332.
