An early history of 1200 Hathaway Road

Karen Roberts was walking her dog early one morning last week when she ran into a neighbor watering her flower pots. ‘Neighbor’ is always surprised to see Karen ‘cause she’s generally in northern Michigan most of the summer. “Burnell’s still in Michigan, but I had to run home to do a few things.  Have you seen our ‘Woman’s Literary Club’ member’s latest book? We take the ‘Traverse City Record Eagle’ in Michigan and they carried a large picture and review of Martha Moody’s book…I’ll copy it and put it in your mailbox.”

Karen did better than that – an envelope was stuck in the front screen door – with a “Fun to see you!” written on the front.  The book review of “The Office of Desire” by Dr. Martha Moody (Jacobs) was a three column piece and carried a large, glamorous picture. “In the follow-up to her successful first book, ‘Best Friends’, Moody, a doctor herself, writes with an easy style and sure eye for the details of people’s lives and passions…”  It’ll be a ‘must read’ – as was her first book.

On Friday, Sept. 14th Oakwood High School’s Class of ’67 will begin their week-end-long reunion.  Doug Schaeffer will host the first ‘do’ with a dinner party.  Nancy Heck Sternal said she’d be flying in from Minneapolis late that afternoon and would go directly to Doug’s small gathering.   Cathy Chamberlain and Sue Ewing would be arriving at about the same time…they’ll be staying with Nancy at her parents’ place on Oakwood Avenue.

A large post card announced the ….“Sixtieth Anniversary Celebration of Dayton’s International Economic & Political Presence  (DCOWA). Save  the date for a black-tie evening at the National Museum of the United States Air Force – Friday, November 2, 2007, 6: 00-9:30 PM.  Reception, dinner, entertainment and a special address by General Colin L. Powell, USA (Ret.).

Over the years DCOWA has featured world leaders such as President John F. Kennedy , Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Eleanor Roosevelt. This year Gen. Powell will be making a rare regional appearance as the special guest speaker.
Invitations with full details will be mailed in September.  Call DCOWA at 937-229-2319 for more info.

Walter Schaller, DCC Mgr. and internationally known marathon runner, is back from his native Switzerland after a planned trip to climb the Matterhorn – for his third time! “I had a delightful trip…saw lots of family…and my son and I had some great skiing.” “Skiing in August?”  “Yes, in the higher altitudes the snow is wonderful all summer… but this year Switzerland has had record breaking snow falls which is why we couldn’t climb Matterhorn.  My Guide, that I‘ve climbed with twice before, has only been up twice this summer…generally he takes three to four trips up per week…he said the mountain (14,000 plus feet) is just not safe this season.
