This summer, Oakwood High School senior Julia Goff represented the State of Ohio at the annual Girls Nation in Washington, D.C. One of only two girls selected from 900 who attended Buckeye Girls State at Ashland University earlier in the year, Goff had the opportunity to meet individually with Senators George Voinovich and Sherrod Brown and participate with the full group for a photo session and discussion with President Bush.
Before attending, Goff and another Ohio “Senator” at Buckeye Girls State, wrote legislation regarding service learning in Ohio high schools. She was chosen to attend Girls Nation following a rigorous process which included essays, nominations from counselors, and interviews with Auxiliary personnel. Girls Nation participants are considered for their intelligence, positive attitudes, enthusiasm for learning, and motivation for future accomplishments.
Sponsored and funded by The American Legion Auxiliary since 1947, Girls Nation is a week-long government training program designed to instill in each delegate a deep loyalty to American ideals and provide practical insight into the operations of the federal government.
Goff was sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Post #598 in Kettering, Ohio. She is the daughter of Mark and Karen Goff of Oakwood.
On Thursday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m. at the Board Office Building, the Oakwood Schools will hold a meeting for Oakwood parents and residents about the recently installed security cameras. Oakwood School Treasurer Kevin Philo will show live video from the buildings of what is being recorded and answer questions about its applications. The cameras were installed in the summer of 2007 for additional security for the students, staff, and property after passage of the May 2007 Permanent Improvement Replacement Levy and recommendations from law enforcement officials.
All major entrances and hallways at every building (Oakwood High School, Junior High, Mack Hummon Stadium, Smith, Harman, and Lange Elementaries) are being recorded 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, all buildings have cameras outside for additional security.
Principals and secretaries can also monitor the system live and every location can also be seen at the Board Office and the Oakwood Safety Department in case of an emergency. Public view monitors were also installed at the major entrances to the buildings so visitors and students would be reminded of the video system. Treasurer Kevin Philo stated, “It is our intent that these cameras be more of a preventative measure. We want these cameras and the knowledge of their presence to help deter problems.”
Digital Video Security of Dayton, represented by residents Scott Smith and Andy Diefenderfer of Oakwood, installed the camera security system.
The school district has had success with security cameras at the stadium the past three years. These were installed after numerous bicycles were stolen and the restrooms were vandalized. Since then the cameras have helped solve thefts and also the number of thefts have decreased significantly.
If you have any questions about this meeting, please contact School Treasurer Kevin Philo at 297-5332.
