An early history of 1200 Hathaway Road

Soccer Jacks fall 4-1

Tristan Schnader and Zack Rodabaugh move the ball downfield against the Bellbrook Eagles.

On Sept. 11, the Jacks ended their winning streak by losing to Bellbrook 4-1. The first half saw the two teams evenly matched though Bellbrook scored off a free kick.

In the second half, a play from Tristan Schnader to Simon Gifford and then to Philip Wille saw Wille place a precision strike from 15 yards on the left to the upper right netting for Oakwood’s goal. Bellbrook drew a foul in the box, but the penalty kick by Bellbrook was saved on the line by Oakwood keeper Scott Harman. Oakwood spirits soared, but within minutes, Bellbrook drew another foul in the box. This time Bellbrook’s penalty kick converted for a Bellbrook 2-1 lead.

The two rapid PKs deflated Oakwood, and thereafter Bellbrook appeared to dominate the game. Two more goals at short range by Bellbrook on counterattacks sealed the victory for the Eagles.

Soccer Jills winged by Eagles 1-0

Bellbrook’s Lady Eagles soccer team came to town last Tuesday for a S.W.B.L. first place showdown with the Oakwood Jills.  Both teams entered the match undefeated in league play, Bellbrook at four wins and 0 losses, Oakwood with three wins, 0 losses, and one tie.  The game lived up to its billing, as both teams played well in a hard-fought contest.

The first half was evenly played, Bellbrook having the edge in possession, Oakwood getting more shots, 5 to 4.  It appeared that the half would

end in a scoreless tie, but in the waning seconds Bellbrook intercepted an Oakwood throw-in, got the ball to midfielder Jessie Jarrett who got open twenty yards in front of the goal, and kicked one in with just four seconds showing on the clock.  Halftime score:  Bellbrook 1, Oakwood 0.

The Jills didn’t hang their heads, though, coming out fired up in the second half, possessing the ball, and playing their best soccer of the season.  Early on Haley Ward directed a kick toward a sprinting Molly Breidenbach who just missed getting a foot on the ball as it crossed in front of the goal.  A little later a Breidenbach throw-in found Ward, whose shot sailed just high.  At the 23 minute mark Breidenbach lobbed a pass to Brooke Klopsch whose header just missed.  At 11:28 a hustling Tory Danis beat several Bellbrook defenders, but her shot sailed high.  Danis tried again at the 2:39 mark, but the Eagle keeper was there for the save.  Numerous times throughout the second half Oakwood had throw-ins in the Bellbrook end.  Breidenbach’s throws were strong, but to the Lady Eagles credit, the Jills couldn’t cash in.  Final score: Bellbrook 1, Oakwood 0.

In the “life isn’t always fair” department, Jills junior defender Elizabeth Dickerson, who suffered a season-ending knee injury last year, went down early in the Bellbrook game.  Liz injured the other knee this time, and is again out for the year.  Liz worked hard last winter to come back, and she’ll do it again this year, readying for a great senior year.

The girls are busy this week, playing three games in four days.  Oakwood hosted Franklin last night, plays at Brookville tonight, and is home against Waynesville Thursday night.  The varsity record is three wins, three losses and one tie.  The JV’s, under coach Dave Klum, are 4-1-1.

Jills 3rd, Jacks 4th at Alliance X-country Invitational

On a near perfect day for a cross country meet, the Oakwood cross country team ran strong races at the Alliance Running Cross Country Invitational held at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center.

Peter Hix led the boys with a second place finish. Senior Jon Taylor followed close behind in eighth place. Juniors Chris Wolcott and Marc Skill finished 26th and 39th respectively. Rounding out the top six for the Jacks were Freshman Joey Neff and Philip Sizek finishing 43rd and 44th. Tory Tomlinson, Andy Lamb Michael Wuebker, Keith Mueller, Andy Myers, Noah Berry, Will Reese and Ethan Kissock were the other finishers for the Jacks. The Jacks finished fourth overall in the team standings

The Jills were led by sophomore Elizabeth Connelly who finished second overall. Hilary Beyer was the next Oakwood finisher coming in 16th. Running the entire race together, Natalie Denka, Alex Conniff and Sarah Deitz came across the line 30th, 31st and 32nd respectively. Following closely behind and rounding out the top six for the Jills was Ericha Griep (35th). Rachel Conniff, Shannon Hallinan, Hanna McCarthy, Autumn Bruno, Taylor Shade, Ginny Beth Fulford, Alexandra Harmony and Tiantian Zhang were the other finishers for the Jills. The girl’s team placed third overall in the combined Division II/III event.

Earlier in the week, the Jills finished first and the Jacks fourth at the Bellbrook Invitational. Next week the Oakwood High School Cross Country Team will compete in the run along the river at the Troy Invitational.

Cross Country

The Oakwood Cross Country Team ran in the Alliance Running Cross Country Invitational. The boys finished fourth and the girls second.

Jr. High X-country places at Invitational

At the Alliance Running Cross Country Invitational, area junior high teams ran two miles over much of the same course that the high school racers had just completed.
The junior high Jacks were led by Aaron Pruitt who finished eighth overall.  Andrew Redden and Casey Linzmeier came in together at thirty-seventh and thirty-eighth.

Josh Kolar, Ben Gallatin and Neil Milligan rounded out the top six for the junior high boys. Javan Austin, George Hockwalt, Thomas McCready, Matt Buford, and Patrick McCready also completed the course for the Jacks. The boy’s team placed seventh overall.

The junior high Jills were led by Erin Taylor who finished sixty-fourth. Natalie Draper was the second finisher for the Jills followed by Jackie White. Emily Murphy and Anita Thomas rounded out the scoring for the Oakwood Junior High Girls, who finished eleventh in the team scoring.

OHS field hockey on scoreboard

The Oakwood Varsity Field Hockey team evened their season record (1-1) with a physical win at Mount Notre Dame.  The first half was all Notre Dame as the half ended with the score 1-0 in favor of the opposition.  For the second week in a row, half time adjustments created the spark for a rally.  Freshman Ali Taylor scored on a nice assist from Senior Co-Captain Sarah Maher to tie the game.  After pushing the ball up the left side of the field, Taylor scored her second and winning goal on a beautiful unassisted shot from the left wing just inside the circle with under 2 minutes remaining in the game.  The final Notre Dame attack came up short as time expired and Oakwood won 2-1.  The Junior Varsity game ended in a 2-2 tie as they showed great improvement.  Sophomore Maddie Shearer scored both JV goals with assists coming from fellow sophomores Erin Maher and Lyndsay Seery.

Saturday had the Jills in Columbus to take on Worthington Kilbourne and Dublin Jerome.  The first game was at Worthington with a final score of 1-0 Oakwood.  This score however was not indicative of the play on the field as Oakwood dominated action for most of the game with 27 shots on goal and 15 penalty corners. Credit Kilbourne’s outstanding goalie and defense for keeping the game tight as the Jills were kept from many scoring opportunities. The first half ended tied at 0-0. The second half exhibited full field action with the lone Oakwood goal coming as Kira Fenstermacher worked the ball in front of the Kilbourne goal until it finally went in.

In the second game, Oakwood continued to look strong early on the hot fast turf field at Dublin.  Playing out of her normal position, Caroline Hartel played exceptionally well, consistently pushing the ball up-field for many fast breaks. Like the first game the first half ended with a 0-0 tie. In the second half Ali Taylor scored early on an unassisted goal.  Dublin evened the score about five minutes later and the duel continued deadlocked. The final and deciding score went to Dublin toward the end of the second half when they capitalized upon a Penalty Corner.  This brings the Jills season record to two wins and two losses. The Junior Varsity played well in their two matches.  They lost a heartbreaker 0-1 against Kilbourne as the opposition scored in the final seconds.  The second game was a solid win as with first half goals from Maddie Shearer and Brittany Hemmelgarn.  The JV squad held on from there as both teams went scoreless in the second half for a 2-0 win.

Junior high field hockey 7-0 on season

The Oakwood Junior High Field Hockey team kicked off league play two weeks ago with a dominating 7 to 0 win over Summit Country Day. The game started with very good up and back midfield action with neither team threatening. That ended quickly as Emily Skill put in the first of her three goals having been assisted by Sarah Zabarnick. That opened the floodgate as two minutes later Anna Johnsen took a pass from Mary Oda (two assists for the game) up the middle for the second score. Shortly thereafter, on the Jills first penalty corner of the night, Peanut Johnson hooked up, for the first of her two scores, with Hanna French. The half ended 6-0 without a Summit shot on the Oakwood goal. Oakwood only allowed one shot on their goal all game and seventh grade goalie Heather Brooks made a nice save to preserve the shutout.  That weekend, the Jills were at Kettering and played a double header against two tough Columbus schools. The early game was against undefeated St. Andrews. After jumping ahead on the first of two goals by Emily Skill and Anna Johnsen (assist by Mary Oda), St. Andrews and Oakwood played a fast, full field game. Peanut Johnson scored right before the half on an unassisted goal to put the Jills ahead 3 to 0.

The second half was also dominated by the Jills with Hanna French slamming home a shot off of a Penalty Corner opportunity. Saturday’s second game versus Bexley provided more of a challenge. Oakwood again jumped out to an early lead as Peanut Johnson could not be stopped. With assists from Hanna French and Sarah Zabarnick, Peanut popped in two early goals before Bexley answered at the nine minute mark. Peanut finished her hat-trick half with a play typically not seen at the junior high level. On a penalty corner opportunity, Peanut took the inbound and flicked the ball over the Bexley goalie for the score. In the second half Bexley kept it close with an early score to make it 3-2 and pressured Oakwood, but Emily Skill extended the Jill’s lead to a comfortable 4-2 with an assist by Peanut. Anna Johnsen finished the Jill’s scoring when Hanna French centered the ball from the left wing to make the final score was 5-2.

This past week saw action at home versus Van Buren Middle School. Oakwood scored early and often and all 29 girls saw action during the game. Two goals came from Emily Skill and single goals from Anna Johnsen, Hanna French, Katie Taylor, Maddie Maney, Shelby Howell and defensive stalwart Nicole Maher. This past weekend matches were much more challenging when the Jills traveled to Columbus. The first match of the day was a rematch against the Dublin Shamrocks. The Jills won a closely played defensive match 1-0 on a goal from Peanut Johnsen with the assist from Mary Oda. The second game was against the Olentangy Silverhawks. Oakwood dominated this young team 3 to 0 with goals from Peanut Johnsen, Emily Skill, and Hanna French. Assists came from Anna Johnson and French.

This moves the Oakwood 2007 tally to seven wins without a loss, outscoring their opponents 34-4.
