An early history of 1200 Hathaway Road

'roundtown will return next week !

The following is a rerun from the September 18th issue...

Nineteen sixty seven was obviously a ‘vintage’ year!  It’s obvious when ‘tasting’ the produce of Oakwood High School’s graduating class of forty years ago!  The ‘yield’ from the ’67 crop has been tested through-out the country – and it’s received top honors.

Nancy Shelton, ’67, was chair of the 40th OHS reunion.  She did a terrific job of locating, notifying, and planning for the reunion-weekend of Sept. 14-15.  Over sixty alums plus some spouses were there.  Most had also been in Harman and Smith grade schools together  - so there were at least 12 years of reminiscing and forty years of catching-up to handle.

Doug Schaeffer kicked-off festivities with a dinner party Friday evening at L’Auberge for his …’oldest ‘n bestest’ friends.  There were ten of them. According to L’Auberge’s owner, Joseph Reif, the group was slow in arriving. According to an attendee “…we were asked to leave at 1: 30 a.m.” Which doesn’t sound too unreasonable on the part of the restaurant.

Lots of the alumns went to the Oakwood football game – a home game – and then to a get-together at Marion’s Pizza.  There was a golf-outing on Saturday at Heatherwood, and a tennis tournament at Hollinger. The big Saturday-night-dinner was at Dayton Country Club beginning at six thirty.

Eight of the ‘returnees’ began activities early Saturday evening  for a Pre-Party on Oakwood Avenue at Nancy Heck Gibson’s family home.  Doug Schaeffer was one of the first to arrive.  Doug lives in California and is into real-estate. “I’m staying with
Mom…(Paula Schaeffer on Timberlake)…and she said to tell every one hello.”
Mike Requarth was met at the door by Nancy’s mother with …”I was at Fairview High School with your Uncle Harold Requarth.”

Mike has been in the construction business in California for years and has just sold his business. Alice Keys Kling stayed with her parent’s (Jack & Mary Kay Keys) home on Collingwood. Alice teaches school in California.

Bob Young is from “…Montana & Florida…”  How’s that for locations? Chris Clark lives in Littleton, Colorado and “…you’ll be interested to know that my daughters are both into showing ‘Open Jumpers’. They did well at the Indio show in California.” (That’s one of the best ‘competitions’ in the country.)

And then Kathy Chamberlin arrived!  Someone mentioned that Kathy is in the ‘Mountain Bike Hall of Fame’ – Crested Butte, Colorado.  She lives in Aspen, CO. Daughter, Asia, is with the ‘Aspen Institute’. Sue Ewing was there from California… what’s with the class of ’67 and California?

Kathey Fitchey Calvin did NOT come from California – Kathy lives in Washington,DC – and – Kathy is Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer of…The United Nations Foundation!  Which was founded by Jane Fonda & Ted Turner.

“We’ve gotta get to DCC – the Class Photo will be taken at 7:15…”  The reports of the Big Party were glowing.  Dr. Doug West, and his Oakwood High School Combo, played. They played nine songs and quit – ‘Nine is all we can remember.”  Doug’s mother, Janette West, was there too.

Ann Hagedorn, who was on a ‘Book Tour’ to publicize her fourth novel, joined her classmates. Molly Hobstetter Wentworth came in from her home in Waynesville, Bonnie Bright Heikes, Janet Fanning Dues,  and Laurie Glossinger Streit were there.

“We left DCC about 1:30 and went to the Marriott where many were staying. The Marriott was not too happy to see us either.”

Let’s wish the Sixty-Seven’s many more and that their ‘subsequents’ will be as much fun.

Sally Fisher called on her cell phone on the way to Cincinnati.  Sally’s been in town for two days – staying with Coreen Huber – and hunting for a house. “I’m exhausted… I’ve seen every house in Oakwood, Kettering, Washington Twp., and points south.  And I have bought a house!  It’s on Big Hill…a contemporary…wooded lot…very steep driveway…we’ll love it. We’ve got to be out of our house in Florida by the end of Oct. so we’ll be back up North very soon…”

The Junior League of Dayton has just elected a new slate of officers.  Kelly Uhl is President;  Ellen Vaughn, of Oakwood, is this year’s New Member Committee chair. There are 22 new members including the following from Oakwood:  Julie Cannon, Jannelle Chamberas, Jennifer Johnson, Holly Kuhn, and Ali Peters.
