Mayor Cook outlines 2008 Centennial

The Oakwood City Council meeting convened on Monday night. Councilmember Roger Blumensheid was absent but excused. Also not present was City Manager Norbert Klopsch. Filling in for him was Deputy City Manager Jay Weiskircher.

Mayor Judy Cook began by issuing a proclamation noting that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Noting that one in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetimes, that nationally over 470,000 women will be diagnosed this year and that over 40,000 will succumb to the disease, she announced that a number of programs throughout the month dealing with breast cancer will be held. One event mentioned the Mayor will held on Wednesday, Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Courthouse Square in downtown Dayton. Entitled “Paint the Square Pink,” the event will feature a number of informative programs dealing with breast cancer. As an added amusement, the Courthouse Square fountain’s water will be dyed pink.

Mayor Cook also outlined tentative plans for the upcoming Oakwood Centennial. According to her, the Centennial will go into full swing beginning during the “That Day in May” festivities and will effectively end with the end-of-summer Ice Cream Social. In between will be a number of events including a week dedicated to education about the history of Oakwood, a week highlighting the architectural treasures in Oakwood and one week dedicated to fitness and recreation. She also mentioned the need for volunteers and to call the city at 298-0600 for more information on volunteering.

Mayor Cook also announced the formation of an Oakwood Centennial Club. One is an automatic member in good standing if a citizen can add the number of years he or she has lived in Oakwood plus one’s age together to make 100.

Director of Leisure Services Carol Collins gave her annual departmental update. The Gardner Pool had 36,307 visitors this year. Also, the Oakwood Dolphins held two swim meets there and are celebrating their 4th year of being undefeated. The Orchardly Park wading pool counted 18,987 splashers to the pool. The New Resident Breakfast had 120 attendees; the Ice Cream Social had over 2,500 people present and the annual Hot Dog Supper counted over 250 diners. She also announced that the Family Fall Festival will be taking place on Oct. 14 and that the holiday event “Lighting of Oakwood” will take place this year on Sunday, Dec. 9.

Deputy City Manager Jay Weiskircher gave the city manager’s report. According to Weiskircher, the WiFi network is fully operational throughout most of Oakwood now. The network is only audible though outside   however. He also announced that “Project Shred,” will be taking place at the J.D. Foell Public Works Center, 210 Shafor Blvd. on Saturday, Oct. 22 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. Shred-it, the world’s leading mobile document destruction company will be on-site to provide free document destruction services for paper documents, microfilm, microfiche and CD-ROM diskettes, among others. The next formal meeting is scheduled for Nov. 5, 2007.

Bank robber nabbed by authorities

It didn’t take long for the Oakwood Police Department, with the help of the Dayton Violent Crime Task Force and the FBI, to apprehend a suspect in the Tuesday, Sept. 25 robbery of the branch office of Huntington Bank Branch office at 2401 Far Hills Ave.

According to police records, at approximately 9:30 a.m. last Tuesday morning, a lone white male entered the bank and gave the teller a note demanding cash. He was neither armed nor did he imply that he had a weapon. The teller gave the cash to the man, who then left the bank, walking towards Far Hills Avenue on foot.

Bank security cameras captured several clear images of the robber, making identification easy. He was described as approximately six feet tall, about 180 lbs, and was shown to have black hair slightly graying on the sides. He was clean-shaven, well groomed and wearing a light-colored golf shirt with tan khaki pants.
With the help of several tips from the various media that had been notified, the Oakwood Police Dept., Dayton Violent Crime Task Force and the FBI identified Terry J. Black as a suspect in the robbery. On a tip, the Oakwood detectives and members of the Violent Crimes Task Force went to the 35 West Motel where they located the suspect. Black was taken into custody without incident.

The detectives recovered a large sum of cash as well as the note used in the robbery and Black has confessed to the crime. According to Oakwood Safety Dept. Capt. Randy Baldridge the suspect has a prior bank robbery record, which means that the case will be turned over to the FBI who will pursue federal charges of bank robbery against the suspect.
