Dayton Wings Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals will celebrate EXECUTIVE APPRECIATION NIGHT on Wednesday, Oct. 17 with guest speaker Joyce Carter SPHR, Vice President, Human Resources, the University of Dayton.
Ms. Carters’ address: “Emotional Intelligence, A Key to Career Advancement” will give valuable insights that apply to both our personal and professional lives. The Dayton Wings Chapter IAAP promotes career and personal development for office professionals.
Meetings are held at Sinclair Community College, Charity Earley Auditorium, David H. Ponitz Center. The Dayton Council on World Affairs opening Insights program will feature “China at a Glance” on Thursday, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. at the St. Paul Episcopal Church, 33 W. Dixon Ave., Oakwood. Speaking will be Dr. Yufeng Wang, professor at Sinclair Community college, and Esther Yu, Springboro High School student and JCOWA representative on the Dayton Council on World Affairs board.
Dr. Yufeng lead an educational tour to China in June 2007. She and her daughter Esther will share their vibrant experience in the Chinese educational and cultural context. Music and dancing performance by Esther Yu along with a possibility for art and calligraphy demonstrations.
DCOWA’s Insights series provides an overview of political, economic and cultural developments in countries around the world.

The Yellow Springs Street Fair will be Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. with the music festival running from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. This free, one-day festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors and brings vendors and entertainers from all over the country to the lovely, eclectic streets of Yellow Springs.
Over 250 booths will be selling merchandise, services, and delectable varieties of national and international cuisine from Vietnamese Shish-Kabob to good old fashioned hot dogs and hamburgers. Four streets will be closed to vehicular traffic and filled with fine arts & crafts, clothing, jewelry, fair trade items, unique gifts, and much more.
You’ll find The Egyptian Breeze Belly Dancers, strolling musicians, interactive booths with games and surprise street entertainment sure to delight you. Yellow Springs is full of surprises so there is always something unique and unexpected at Street Fair.
Live music will be performed all day, from 12 p.m. until 7 p.m., on the property of Mills Lawn Elementary School, adjacent to the Street Fair. The music is sponsored by Peach’s Grill in Yellow Springs.
The event is free, open to the public, and handicapped accessible. NO PETS will be allowed at Street Fair. Street Fair is a semi-annual event held on the second Saturday in June and October in downtown Yellow Springs and is sponsored by the Yellow Springs Chamber of Commerce. Wellness Connection of the Dayton Region in collaboration with The Wellness Community will host a free workshop for Advanced Breast Cancer patients entitled: The Patient Active Guide to Living with Advanced Breast Cancer. The program will focus on the needs of women newly diagnosed with advanced (metastatic) breast cancer, and also includes information relevant to women who have lived two to five years with metastatic breast cancer. This free workshop will take place on Oct. 16, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at El Meson Restaurant, 903 E Dixie Drive. Advanced reservations are required by Oct. 8. There will be a panel discussion with breast cancer survivors from Noble Circle.
Clear and unbiased information will be provided about survivorship issues, new treatments, and concerns for women newly diagnosed with metastatic cancer, in order to empower them to be active participants in their cancer journey. The Patient Active Guide to Living with Advanced Breast Cancer is created by The Wellness Community - National in collaboration with Living Beyond Breast Cancer and made possible through an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline Oncology.
The Department of Leisure Services is again thrilled to announce Oakwood’s Fifth Annual Scarecrow Building Contest! The City is hosting this fun filled fall community event in October which is open to Oakwood scout troops, church and school organizations, businesses, individuals and families. Pick a theme and start building from there! Make sure you come up with a great name for your scarecrow.
Just think of how neat it was last year to see Shafor Boulevard (Scarecrow Row) filled with scarecrows and cornstalks. This year we hope to see more scarecrows around the community. The more participants we have the more fun the event will be.
Registration packets are now available from the Oakwood Community Center business office. Each packet contains the rules and regulations for the program as well as the building guidelines and an entry form to be completed and returned to the OCC for an assigned location. The building and placement of scarecrows will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Judging will take place promptly at 3:30 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to First, Second and Third place winners and announced at Oakwood’s Fall Festival at Shafor Park.

Will be held on Saturday, Oct. 20, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. Play “Bernoulli Skee Ball” or build and fly a paper ring glider during this month’s Family Day at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force on Oct. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Designed for children and adults of all ages, Family Day offers several hands-on opportunities for all to enjoy. On select Monday evenings join Mrs. Rose at Wright Library for stories, games, songs, and crafts in the Children’s Room. Each program starts at 7 p.m. and lasts about forty-five minutes. All ages are welcome, and no registration is required.

The Oakwood Rotary Club and the Oakwood Community Center are co-sponsoring a blood drive on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Oakwood’s Family Fall Festival, sponsored by the Department of Leisure Services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 14, at Shafor Park. The hours are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The afternoon will be filled with old fashioned activities and game for the whole family including a costume parade, diaper derby, pumpkin painting, three legged races, donut dive, wheelbarrow races, pumpkin bowling, potoato golf, pumpkin toss and much, much, more. And din’t forget there will be hay rides for the whole family going along Scarecrow Row. You can see the new 2007 scarecrows along Shafor Boulevard. Also included in the day’s entertainment are local musical groups. Enjoy an afternoon full of fun games, food and entertainment for the whole family.
Family 8-on-8 Soccer Tournament, Saturday, Oct. 20. This Round Robin 8-on-8 medium field tournament is open to any Oakwood children in third through sixth grade, and any related adults 18 years of age or older. Grade divisions will be coed. This tournament is limited to 16 teams, and grade divisions may be combined due to low enrollment. Pick up rule packets and rosters sheets upon sign up. Multiple Oakwood families will make up one team. Teams can be all boys, girls, or coed.
