Congratulations to senior Kelsey Haviland who fell to Gabbie Steele of Summit Country Day during a tough three set match last weekend at the Ohio singles tennis tournament.  Haviland finished second in the state for the Division II singles tournament with a 6-4, 4-6, 2-6 defeat in a 2.5 hour match. Kelsey will continue her tennis career with The Ohio State University next fall with a full ride scholarship in women’s tennis. Great job Kelsey!

X-country heading to Regional tourney

The Oakwood High School Cross Country team ran in the 2007 OHSAA Southwest District Cross Country Tournament at the Miami Valley Career Technical Center. Under clear skies and moderate temperature both the girls and the boys qualified for the Regional Tournament next Saturday.

Leading the way for the Jacks and finishing second overall was Peter Hix. Jon Taylor finished 20 seconds behind him in sixth place. Senior Gabe Svobodny finished fourteenth shaving 30 seconds off of his SWBL time. Chris Wolcott and Marc Skill, 38th and 39th respectively, also scored for Oakwood. Joey Neff (42nd) and Philip Sizek (46th) were the other runners for the Jacks. The boys finished fourth in the team scoring, eight points behind SWBL rival Brookville.

Elizabeth Connelly led the Jills finishing third overall. Julia Sizek finished six seconds later in fourth place. Natalie Denka (19th), Hilary Beyer (24th) and Ericha Griep (29th) rounded out the scoring for the Jills. Shannon Hallinan (33rd) and Rachel Conniff (37th) were the other finishers for Oakwood. The Jills finished third in the team scoring one point behind Brookville.

Last Monday night the Oakwood girls soccer team entered Division II, Dayton 1 Sectional Tournament play, hosting the Carlisle Indians. The Jills took control early, Molly Breidenbach gathering in an assist from Tory Danis just nine minutes into the game and nailing a shot  from 20 yards out for a 1-0 lead.  Four minutes later Breidenbach struck again, this time from 30 yards out on the right wing, for a 2-0 count.  With 11 minutes to go in the first half Brooke Klopsch weaved her way through a band of Lady Indians, found an open Tory Danis sprinting down the right side, and fed her nicely.  Danis finished it off with a strong shot into the goal for a 3-0 halftime lead.

The second half was all Oakwood.  Brooke Klopsch got the ball rolling just 40 seconds into the half, taking it down the right side and hitting a strong crossing shot.  Carlisle’s goalkeeper was able to block the shot, but Breidenbach was there to clean it up, tallying her third goal of the night and giving the Jills a 4-0 lead.  Six minutes later Danis served up a cross from the right corner which Klopsch headed in, and it was 5-0.  With 19 minutes to go Emily Steiner banged a shot off the Carlisle keeper.  This time Klopsch was there for the clean-up, chipping the ball over the keeper for a 6-0 lead.  The Jills went on to score three more times, Ellen Viereckl on an assist from Colleen Hallinan, Chris Davis on an assist from Tory Danis, and Hayley Ward off of a corner kick from Molly Breidenbach.  Final score:  Oakwood 9, Carlisle 0.

Thursday, the Jills traveled to Lemon Monroe for a second round game against the fourth-seeded Lady Hornets.  Monroe entered the contest with a record of 17 wins and 0 losses, having outscored their opponents 118 to 3.  Oakwood quickly found out this record was no fluke.

Playing with a very strong wind at their back and a very aggressive style. The Monroe girls dominated play, scoring five first half goals, rarely allowing Oakwood to venture across midfield, and allowing no Oakwood shots. The Jills didn’t quit, though, and after a halftime talk from head coach Dawn Gaydosh, and with the wind at their back, played Monroe evenly in the second half.  Olivia Reasoner got the Jills on the board, tapping one in off a long Molly Breidenbach throw-in.  Breidenbach tallied the second Oakwood goal when a long Hayley Ward kick bounced out of the crowd and Mollly was there to left-foot it in. Final score: Lemon Monroe 7, Oakwood 2.

The Jills, while disappointed with bowing out of the tournament in the second round, still had a fine season against a tough schedule, posting a record of nine wins, six losses, and three ties.  Many thanks to head coach Dawn Gaydosh and assistants Dave Klum and Kate Grunkemeyer for all their time and effort.

OJHS field hockey has 14-0 perfect season

The 2007 OJHS Jills field hockey team.

Coming off of last year’s historical undefeated season, this year’s field hockey team had much to live up to…and they didn’t disappoint. The 2007 Jills stormed through the competition en route to an unprecedented 14-0 perfect season.  Led by a strong group of returning eighth graders, the offensive minded Jills outscored their local, Cincinnati, and Columbus opponents 70 to 5, averaging a staggering five goals per game.

Demonstrating incredible team depth and skill, eleven different athletes scored at least one goal, while eleven different athletes had at least one assist.  On defense, the Jills were equally impressive, stifling opposing offenses in 11 shut out victories.

The Jills concluded their perfect season with the annual league tournament.  After defeating the number-four-seeded Van Buren Middle School, 5-0, Oakwood faced archrival Kettering Middle School in the Final.  After a relatively close first half, the Jills put on a field hockey clinic in the second half, scoring four consecutive goals for a dominating 6-0 victory over the Firebirds and back-to-back league championships.

This year’s eighth graders leave the junior high program with a phenomenal, two-year, undefeated record of 22 wins, 0 losses, and 2 ties.  They leave behind them a great group of seventh graders who are eager to fill their cleats, carrying on the new winning tradition of Oakwood junior high field hockey.

Jills hockey to face Fairmont for District crown

The District field hockey tournament began last week.  On Thursday, the number-four-seeded Oakwood field hockey team hosted the number-five-seeded Mount Notre Dame at Irving Field.

Both teams played an up-tempo game pushing the action the length of the field. Penalty corners, and shots on goal were fairly evenly distributed during the first half but both teams defense turned back all opportunities for a 0-0 half time score.

The beginning of second half held much the same as both teams kept the pressure on the opposition but Oakwood began to gain advantage with additional scoring opportunities. The Jills finally hit pay dirt when with 22:01 on the clock they lined up for their seventh penalty corner try.  Sarah Maher in-bounded the ball to Caroline Hartel who drew the defense toward her and tipped the ball to Lucy Shafer.  Shafer unleashed a powerful shot from the top right of the circle that was deflected by a defenders stick and the MND goalies pads. Sarah Oda swept into the center and played the deflection through the goalies legs for the score.

The remainder of the game was tense as MND realized their season was about to end. The rest of the half however played much like the first half with neither team gaining an advantage and Oakwood prolonged their season with a 1 to 0 win. The Jills travel to number-one-seeded Fairmont on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for the season’s rubber match and the chance to reach their second District finals in as many years.

8th grade volleyball finishes season 14-1

The 8th grade volleyball team.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Oakwood eighth grade volleyball team concluded their regular season with a visit to arch-rival Bellbrook.  Oakwood wasted no time in jumping out to a large lead and beat Bellbrook easily, 25-10, 25-17.  The victory gave the team an undefeated regular season at 13-0, earning them the regular season league title and the number one seed in the SWBL tournament.

After a first round bye, the team faced an upstart Middle Madison squad in the tourney’s second round.  The first game was won relatively easily by the score of 25-18 but Madison came back in the second game, winning 25-23 and sending the match to the decisive third game. This was only the second time all season that Oakwood had been forced to play a third game in a match.  Oakwood once again asserted their dominance in the third game and won 25-15, setting up a tournament rematch with Bellbrook in the SWBL semifinals.

Venturing back to Bellbrook’s home gym to play the revenge-minded Eagles, Oakwood won the first game of the hard-fought match 25-22.  Unfortunately, the home crowd of over 200 people rallied Bellbrook and they upset Oakwood 25-22 and 25-20, finishing Oakwood’s season at 14-1.

Coach Betsy Corbitt’s team consisted of Co-Captains Emily Kugel and Kaila Ryan, Meaghan Malloy, Rachel Ramey, Allison Felkley, Heather Saunier, Erin Duning, Ally Kern, Morgan Nandrasy, and Olivia Gillingham.  Congratulations to Coach Corbitt and the team on an incredible season.
