Ringer named among DBJ ‘Healthcare Heroes’

The Dayton Business Journal recently announced the winners of its annual Healthcare Heroes award and Oakwood’s Joann Ringer, administrator of Miami Valley South Health Center, was among this year’s distinguished recipients. Ringer was honored for her tireless efforts as head of the team that realized the vision of Miami Valley South and developed it into the stunning reality it is today.

Situated on 100 acres off of Wilmington Pike near I-675 in Centerville, the campus with its many trees and lush grass is beautiful. What is more, Ringer and her team took great pains to move “the outside in,” and they did a fine job of that - besides the many windows throughout the facility, the lobby contains a floor to ceiling water feature and a patio off the first floor Kobricks coffee shop Moreover, the “area’s only free-standing emergency department” housed in the rotunda, looks nothing like any emergency room I’ve ever seen - from the local art to the warm colors and soft chairs that invite patients and their loved ones to relax and take a deep breath - it is lovely indeed.

The facility, designed to be aesthetically pleasing, is also state-of-the-art. An extension of Miami Valley Hospital, it  delivers the same caliber of care: Miami Valley’s “28 physicians and 8 physician assistants will split their time between the facilities”.  Beyond that, patients in the emergency room will not have to wait in the lobby, as Miami Valley South offers bedside check-in. Having been admitted to the emergency room, patients enjoy a private room and a television. Miami Valley South also offers a range of outpatient services: “a breast center, radiology,” cardiology services, “complete lab services, [and an] outpatient surgery center”. And Joann Ringer oversaw it all - she was at the forefront of planning and implementing the 80 million dollar project that resulted in what is Miami Valley South.

The project took 3 1/2 years to complete and it was, for Joann Ringer a labor of love. When asked about her involvement, Ringer said, “It was an opportunity to do something in the community,” to leave a “landmark.” What is more, Joann Ringer and her team are changing the way hospitals think about healthcare - Ringer said, “Rather than asking ourselves how we currently do business, we asked ourselves how we should be doing business.”  Miami Valley South is Joann Ringer’s answer to that question: it is a place that puts the patient first and does so in a beautiful environment.

On the Avenue opens for holiday season

Oakwood officials and On the Avenue tenants cut ribbon at opening.

On the Avenue opened its doors on Nov. 8 in a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by City of Oakwood Mayor Judy Cook, Norbert Klopsch, Oakwood City Manager, Jay Weiskircher, Assistant Oakwood City Manager, Ron Johnson, KMO Chamber of Commerce President, and Ann-Lisa Rucker, KMO Chamber of Commerce Executive Director.  Irene Dalichau, owner and Managing Partner of this new concept, called it an exciting new addition to Oakwood, just in time for the Holiday Season.

Situated just across from Talbot’s and Chico’s, On the Avenue features at the present time 15 boutiques (there are eight more spaces available), each individually owned, but with a common sales staff and a central check-out.

“Our customers will get the better of two worlds:  The best merchandise from 23 different product lines all under one roof in a unique shopping environment,” said Irene Dalichau.

On the Avenue features season gifts, children’s wear, custom men’s clothing and accessories, jewelry, women’s wear, arts and antiques, theme rugs, cookies, alterations for women, men and bridal, gifts and much more.  All set in a pleasant environment – with a sitting area for the “Daddy’s and kids” who want to watch TV while Mom is shopping, free coffee and cookies daily – as Irene calls it: “Come visit us, enjoy your time, and we hope you find a good buy or two.”

Medicare specialists open for business

Since the advent of Medicare, seniors have been faced with the dilemma of having to select an appropriate medical plan to work in conjunction with traditional Medicare.  This has only been compounded with the development of Medicare Advantage programs and Medicare Part D.  In 2005, there were only a handful of companies offering Medicare Advantage and Part D prescription drug plans. Now in the state of Ohio, there are over 26 companies offering as many as six plans each. What may have been the best plan for a person in 2007 may not be in 2008. Determining what may be appropriate for someone’s individual needs takes a tremendous amount of time, and a selection made without adequate research has the potential to impact someone financially.

Senior Benefits Re-sources, LLC was established to provide a consultative approach for seniors in reviewing what plans best fit their own personal situation. The principals, Mike Kerns and Peter DiSalvo have 35 years of experience working with individuals of the Miami Valley to better understand their health care plans.
Realizing one plan or company does not fit in all areas; they have contracted with several of the top companies in the nation to provide solutions for their clients.

Of the hundreds of clients that they have consulted with, the driving principle has always been to provide education and multiple options. This approach has been successful not only in retaining clients, but receiving referrals from friends and family  members wanting to attend a meeting and gather information. With their referral network of agents throughout  the state and referrals from satisfied customers, Senior Benefits Resources has shunned the use of direct mailings, and other forms of broad base marketing. The ultimate goal is for someone to make an informed and appropriate selection based upon their personal needs and expectations of the benefits offered.  This outcome can be very difficult to achieve in an auditorium setting when there are so many questions to be answered and unique individual circumstances to take into account. The group may be reached at 937-439-2900 or 937-433-0300.
