The Painted Lady of St. Anne's Hill

47 inducted into National Junior Honor Society

On the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 28, Oakwood Junior High School inducted its charter members in the Oakwood chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. The auditorium was open to family and friends who came to mark this special event. The students were selected after they were invited to apply to the pilot year of the Society at the Junior High, and their applications were evaluated by an anonymous faculty council.

The students’ applications were examined for the Society’s criteria of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character.

The induction ceremony was presided by Mr. Daniel Weckstein, principal, and the Society’s two advisors, Ms. Jennifer Owens and Mrs. Amanda Ammer.

The students will spend the remainder of the school year working on individual and group service projects.

Lange School program receives OSEF grant

Through a generous grant from the Oakwood Schools Education Foundation, the Lange Reads program is receiving six literacy “games” and 52 new “little book” titles in our literacy center. The Lange Reads program pairs trained volunteers with Lange students for regular one-on-one literacy sessions.  “The one-on-one time with a caring adult who builds not only students’ literacy skills but also their confidence is priceless,” said Kim Kappler, Lange School principal and Oakwood Schools’ director of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

The Lange Reads program began last year at Lange through a grant from the Ohio Department of Education. Last year nine trained volunteers worked with 44 students, helping each of them to increase their reading skills by at least two levels in about four months.  This year, the program has recruited 22 volunteers and hope to serve at least 85 students.

“What makes this program special is the participation of community and parent   volunteers who are all invested in the education of our community’s children,” said Nanci Koepke, who serves as the Lange Reads Coordinator. “Lange Reads thanks the Oakwood Schools Education Foundation for   providing the funds needed to expand our successful program.”

People interested in being trained as a Lange Reads volunteer should contact Nanci Koepke at 937-299-8730.

Scholarships available for AFS/USA study abroad

When the local Oakwood Chapter of the Greater Dayton Chapter of AFS-USA, Inc.       dissolved this year, its funds were transferred into a scholarship fund of AFS-USA to benefit  students attending Oakwood  High School who may be in need of financial assistance to enable them to participate in one of the many AFS/USA study abroad opportunities. Interested students are invited to complete a pre-application form and   submit it directly to AFS-USA Admissions. The student should make sure to note that they are applying as “Oakwood High School Scholars.”

Once the pre- application is filed, AFS will assign an Admissions Advisor to answer questions that the student may have and assist the student in filing the full application.  The student’s financial needs are assessed by AFS-USA Admissions staff, which together with the AFS-USA Financial Committee, make recommendations for awards of scholarships.

For information about the AFS-USA study abroad programs, the application process and scholarships, interested students are encouraged to consult the AFS/USA web site www.afs.org/usa or call 1-800-AFS-INFO.
