Wrestlers place second in 6-team meet

Team with the second place trophy at Brookville.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, Brookville High School was the site of a six dual meet tournament where the young Oakwood High School Wrestling Team got second place, losing only to Brookville 42-36 while beating Tri-County North 51-24, Northridge 39-32, Dixie 33-32, and Dayton Christian 54-30.

The place winners were Danny Jacobs 1st, Kevin Lee 2nd, Paul Hochwalt 1st, Alex Kooser 1st, Brandon Bustillo 3rd, Will LeBoeuf 2nd, Dan Kendig 3rd, Chris Klingensmith 2nd, Matt Suits 2nd and Jake Horlacher 2nd. Other wrestlers winning matches were Jameson Kordik, Brian Huey, Jake Horlacher and Taylor Rhodes. Six dual meets in one day is grueling but Head Coach Kesler and Assistant Coaches Seim and Hall have their team in very good condition.  Paul Hochwalt was dominant the entire day and Will LeBoeuf wrestled extremely tough opponents all day, winning some of the big matchups of the tournament.

Wrestlers split a Tri-Meet at Greenville

On Wednesday, Dec. 12, the Oakwood High School Wrestling Team traveled to Greenville, Ohio to wrestle Middletown Madison and the Green Wave of Greenville. Greenville had just moved down from Division I to Division II so they likely were going to be a tough opponent, and they were. Oakwood defeated Middletown Madison in the first meet 46-28 but dropped the second meet to Greenville 47-27.

Although Oakwood wrestled tough against them, Greenville’s greater experience and expertise with leg moves proved difficult to overcome. Double winners of the night were Danny Jacobs, Kevin Lee, Paul Hochwalt, Alex Kooser, and Brandon Bustillo. Single winners were Josh Hoopman, Matt Suits, Chris Klingensmith, and Jack Horlacher. Taylor Rhodes won two reserve matches, both by pin.

Oakwood Invitational next on roster Dec. 22

Fairmont High School was the host of ten varsity wrestling teams for a pool tournament on Saturday.  The ten teams included seven Division I schools and three Division II schools including the Oakwood Jacks.  Teams from the Columbus area and Cincinnati area also competed making the level of competition very high.

Oakwood had two champions, Daniel Jacobs at 103 pounds and Paul Hochwalt at 119 pounds.  Daniel Kendig placed fourth and several other Jacks wrestlers made it to the consolation finals.

While the Oakwood wrestling team lost a few more matches than it won, the tough competition will pay off throughout the season.

The Oakwood Jacks host the Oakwood Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 22 at ‘the Pit.’

CJ’s Cronin to play in T-Mobile Invitational

Dayton Chaminade- Julienne varsity basketball player and Oakwood resident Kate Cronin will head to Albuquerque, N.M. with the rest of her team over the holiday break to participate in a tournament with some of the country’s top-rated teams.

The T-Mobile National High School Basketball Invitational is co- sponsored by the National Federation of State High School Association (NFHS), and will feature eight of the top boys and girls teams, showcasing the best in high school basketball.

The Lady Eagles are one of the four girls teams picked to play in the Invitational, which will be held at the University of New Mexico’s University Arena (“The Pit”) December 28-29.  They will face the nationally ranked Long Beach Poly Jackrabbits from Long Beach Calif., in the first game.

Kate Cronin, also a varsity soccer player, is a junior at CJ and is the daughter of David and Joanne Cronin.

Jills score and win

The Oakwood Jills basketball team soundly defeated Brookville 56-44 in the Pit. Brittany Moore was the game high scorer with 18, followed by Nicole Disbrow with 16 and Cathryn Hardy with 12.
