The Painted Lady of St. Anne's Hill

Dayton Horse Show board met last Monday evening at the Fairgrounds office.  Steve Price, president, called the meting to order. Wade Flory, Steve Carne, Evette Moody, Cindy Neibel, Phil Singleton, Phyllis Heck were present.  Committee Chairs were appointed for the ’08 show – July 30th – August 2nd.  So, mark those dates on your next year’s calendar.

Paula Schaeffer had three old friends for lunch at The Lincoln Park Grill – last Tuesday.  Connie Breen & Ginny Whalen  arrived together – at twelve – and the ‘talking’ began.  At a quarter to three the ‘talking’ was still going full tilt – but since the foursome was the only table occupied they become somewhat self-conscious and they reluctantly said their lengthy ‘good-bye’s.

On Wednesday the first item on the agenda was Jeanne Smith’s birthday – and a trip to her condo off E. Alex-Bell.  Jeanne’s ‘caller’ was a friend from Longfellow Grade School, Col. White Jr. Hi, Fairview Hi School days.  Lots of Oakwood’s ‘younger set’ will remember Jeanne as a teacher at Oakwood High.

Wednesday evening the Thirty-Niners had their annual Christmas party – wives included – at the Polo Club on Lamme Road.

The Polo Club is exceedingly difficult to find!  An ‘invisible’ sign behind the nursing home directs guests through ‘their’ parking lot, and then through a housing development, and finally into what’s left of the wonderful old club’s grounds.  ‘Old Timers’ remember the polo fields, and then Siebenthaler’s Nursery, and…anyhow Midge & Jim Harlan and another couple did finally find their way…

The club house was beautifully ‘Christmassed-up with large wreaths and red bows, and…Greg File catered a delicious dinner.  The traditional carol-singing was led by Margy Anderson – with ‘back-up’ singers Tom Maher and Rick Ohmer.  The carols were interrupted with a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ for Bebe Deuser.

Rick announced his retirement as president – and introduced the new president Jim Deuser.  Loud clapping and boo-ing ensued – but for which  - the ‘retiree’ or the ‘new-ee’ – was not clear.  Rooney Mereness will remain as treasurer :  …”with his hand firmly in the till.” – according to Rick.

Warner & Annie Kiefaber, Carol & Rich Pohl, Bill & Sally Lincoln, and Hal Morrill were there.  It’s great to have Hal back from Florida – after all these years.

Pete & Marge Kuntz, Earl Reeder, Alan & Beth Schaeffer, Jim & Tami Whalen, Lee & Betsy Whitney, Bill & Sue Ferneding, Tom & Nancy Gillaugh, Sonnie & Bill Kasch, Chris & Tara Crowl, and Alan & Lois Baker.

The Dance Group had their annual Christmas Ball at Moraine Country Club on Friday evening.  And the Christmas decorations were fabulous – because there was to be a wedding there on Saturday evening!  What luck!  The music was by the Nostalgia Band – and they were really jiv’en with music from the  40’s, 50’s, 60’s and…

Art & Jean Boc, Walter & Pat Porter, Marty & Harry Ebeling, Sergio & Lynn Alejandrino, Gini Hess, Ginny & Bill Cuthbertson, Marty & Fred Ohmer, Ken &
Angela  Pohl
, and Art & Joan O’Meara were a few of the hundred or so couples…

On Saturday morning Oakwoodites were invited “…through the  snow to…Grandmother’s house we go” (went).  Grandmother was Evie Kling and everyone went though the snow to meet granddaughter Reed Archdeacon. Grandfather, George Kling, said he hadn’t been invited – “…but I couldn’t get to my office, so…”  However, George had company – Bill Kasch – “…cause Sonnie couldn’t make it in her car so I brought her in my 4 WD.”

Reed was dressed for her debut in a Christmas-red jump suit with matching hair bow – and she had lots of smiles for admiring guests.

At noon on Saturday Kathy & Jim Kavanaugh had a celebratory luncheon at Dayton Country Club – in honor of their daughter’s graduation from the University of Dayton. Ashley said the graduation ceremony at the UD Field House was packed – despite the ice ‘n snow.  “There were several hundred in my class – plus the ones in the graduate school, and the PhD grads.  Yes, I’m going to to Grad School – at the Univ. of Tenn. that offers my Phys. Ed. specialty.”

The Whalen/Kavanaugh family lunched in the Ladies Card Room – with the Club Manager, Walter Schaller, serving as Waiter, and Carol Harrah, Club Asst. Mgr., serving as Waitress!

“None of the ‘help’ showed – due to the snow – so….”’

Ashley’s parents, Kathy Kavanaugh & Jim,  her brother, James, her grandmother, Ginny Whalen, her Uncle and Aunt, Bill & Susan Whalen and their son, Adam, and daughter, Colleen – were in the group.  Aunt Helen Jones and friends Marie & Jim O’Donnell – who live in Chicago, Atlanta, and Florida…it was a wonderful party.

Saturday evening the Miami Valley Hunt had scheduled their Christmas party – BUT – everything around Springfield Country Club – was impassable…so by noon the E-Mails read:  ‘Cancelled!”

On Sunday, DCC had their annual ‘Champagne Brunch’– and there were hundreds of ‘brunchers’.  It was also a beautiful party – the food was fabulous – and…

Sunday evening the scene was – Cincinnati – Ron & Ann Shephard invited dozens of fox-hunting-friends from Camargo and MVH to their  great home.  And, Cincy didn’t have any snow or ice!  It was like ‘old home week’ seeing Dick & Shirley Ammon, Katherine and Haggie Hilker,  John and Diane Babcock,  Irv & Selma Harris, Al White, Morley & Brenda Thompson, Martha Hollister.  ‘Round Town’ gleaned news:  ‘Former Gov. & Mrs. Taft have bought a home in Oakwood!’  Dewey Hollister, Martha’s son, is a Landscaper with Uncle, Dick Ammon, - and Dewey is working on the Taft’s new home!  More ‘info’ next week!
