The Winkler Company is pleased to offer a book that tells the inside story of how the Wright Brothers discovered flight... Unlocking the Gateway to Flight: The Keys to the Success of the Wright Brothers tells the fascinating story of how these two remarkable brothers realized mankind's age-old dream of flight. Neither Orville, nor Wilbur held a high school diploma; both had only modest means. Yet, in just four short years they learned the secrets of flight that had evaded even the most famous, the best educated, and the most heavily financed scientists and engineers for centuries. The principles they discovered a century ago still apply to every aircraft built today. Beautifully designed by Bill Patterson, of Patterson Graphics, and liberally illustrated with photographs and diagrams, many from the Wrights' archives, this historic publication marks the centennial of flight with a fresh look at two of America's native sons. The hardcover special edition features 16 additional, full-color pages highlighting the events of December 17, 2003 at Kitty Hawk, NC, and includes exclusive photos of the reenactment of the Wrights' first flight. The hardcover special edition will cost $35.00 plus 7.5% tax and the softcover $22.50 plus 7.5% tax. Shipping is available! Unlocking the Gateway to Flight: The keys to the Success of the Wright Brothers is available to libraries and non-profit organizations at a special discounted price. About the Author Dale H. Whitford has been intensely interested in airplanes and aviation history since early childhood. He built his first flying model airplane at age 6 and that hobby eventually directed him to his life's work. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering and is one of the 5 founders of the University of Dayton Research Institute. Whitford is now retired after 41 years of conducting aeronautical research for government and industry. Living in the Dayton area for the last 52 years Dale became fascinated by the accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright. He began his serious study of their work 30 years ago with a trip to Washington DC to visit Dr. Paul Garber, the first curator of the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum. Garber provided Whitford with a set of 46 large drawings detailing every part of the 1903 Wright Flyers. During the ensuing years, Garber became Whitford's close friend and mentor. Whitford read and lectured extensively to both technical and non-technical groups on the Wrights, their airplane, and the reasons for their success. This book is the culmination of his study.
