Samia Borchers, MD, 159th MCMS president

Samia W. Borchers, M.D., became the one hundred and fifty ninth president of the Montgomery County Medical Society during ceremonies conducted at its annual meeting held Jan. 19, 2008.  A long-time resident of the Dayton community,  Dr. Borchers  received her B.A. degree from Ohio State University in 1974, following up with her M.S. from Wright State University in 1976.  A member of the charter class at Wright State University School of Medicine, she received her medical degree in 1980.  She continued with her training in Dermatology through the Wright State University Dermatology Residency program, entering private practice in that specialty in Dayton in 1984.

Named the “Ohio Dermatologist of the Year” in 2001, Dr. Borchers has been a leading voice in educating the community about the dangers to the skin caused by the sun’s rays and ultraviolet rays emitted from tanning booths.  She helped lead the MCMS Alliance in its efforts to develop a now nationally-recognized educational program, “RAYS” (Raising Awareness of Your Skin) which has been presented to thousands of students across the country. Currently, she has garnered the support of organized medicine to lobby for a legislative ban on tanning booth use for persons under age 18.  In addition to her interest in skin cancer, in 2002, Dr. Borchers sought the support of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society in producing and distributing a poster for physician offices across the state highlighting cancer screening guidelines from the ACS for five major cancers.  She believes that education is the key to combating all cancer, noting that early detection catches cancer early, giving the best chance for life-saving treatment to occur.

Additionally at the Jan. 19 meeting, nine MCMS physicians were honored with 50-Year Awards presented by the Ohio State Medical Association.  Among the awardees are: Louis Becker, MD; James W. Funkhouser, MD; Dale R. Hines, MD; Hugh D. Pittman, MD; Tom L. Sefton, D.O.; Francis J. Seiler, MD; William M. Sherk, MD; Mory Summer, MD; and Dwight L. Tuuri, MD.  A posthumous presentation was made to Lawrence R. Smith, M.D.

Joining Dr. Borchers in leadership as members of the MCMS Board of Directors for the 2008 year are: Glenn C. Hamilton, MD; Evangeline Andarsio, MD;  Annette Chavez, MD; Jonathan Velasco, MD; Ramesh Gupta, MD;  John Haluschak, MD; Walter A. Reiling III, M.D.; Gary Fishbein, MD; Christopher Danis, MD; Shachi Rattan, MD; Timothy Sorg, MD; and Jeffery Adam, MD.

Dr. Samia Borchers practices Dermatology in her office in Kettering.  She and her husband, William Borchers, DDS, reside in Oakwood with their daughter, Christina. The Montgomery County Medical Society is a professional association representing nearly 1000 physician members locally.
